Colleagues,
Please
consider contributing to the following AGU session on the broader
impacts of natural hazards research of all flavors. Do our efforts
work? Is the impact what we intend? Note
that an author (you) can submit an additional abstract to a Public
Affairs section (this one!) without it counting against your submission
limit.
The abstract submission deadline is August 5.
PA016:
Natural hazards research and the real "broader impacts"
Session ID#: 9181
Session Description:
Natural
hazards present a unique and natural laboratory for earth science
research, such as geophysics, geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry,
geodesy and remote sensing, to name just a few, all having the potential
for direct societal applications. Yet despite the many improvements in
hazard science, including monitoring, forecasting and understanding
hazard triggers, economic losses and the number of people affected by
disasters continues to rise. Many research proposals require a broader
impacts statement that reflects the potential benefits to society;
however, there is a deficit in the literature demonstrating how these
“broader impacts” are realized. This session seeks to address the
interplay between scientific knowledge and societal awareness, exploring
how natural hazards research is (or is not) integrated into public
policy and human behavior. We invite presentations of case studies that
highlight how scientific research results have been communicated,
accepted and/or adapted into local, regional or national policy.
Conveners:
