This position works with the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF)/Geophysical Institute (GI) Infrasound Group as a field technician responsible for the continuous operation and maintenance of a number of monitoring stations in support of the US effort under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. Extensive travel to remote field locations is required (Antarctica, Alaska, Pacific islands, etc.) and leading a small field team of other technicians, students and local support personnel is part of the work. At UAF, assisting with fieldwork preparations, maintenance logistics and reporting requirements will be the mainstay of the day-to-day routine. The ideal candidate for this position will have field/ operational experience in remote locations, be flexible in the face of rapidly changing requirements and situations, be able to independently assess and solve technical problems in the field, and work as a part of team.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position:
-Knowledge of field-based research and field support.
-Knowledge of infrasound & seismic sensor design, construction and calibration.
-Ability to develop engineering solutions to infrasound & seismic problems and implement them -in the field or in a laboratory.
-Ability to develop and maintain electronic and computer systems for data acquisition and telemetry in the field.
-Ability to communicate program data and results effectively to managerial, technical and non-scientific personnel.
-Ability to manipulate data and produce charts/graphs to display trends in data and/or stations performance.
-Ability to work in remote locations without direct supervision.
-Ability to interpret data results for reporting to DTRA/CTBTO.
Typical education or training required for this position (including licenses):
-B.S. in physical sciences, electrical engineering, electro-mechanical engineering or closely related field.
-US citizenship is required by the funding agency.
Length of time and type of experience required for this position:
Minimum 4 years experience at the professional level with the following:
- infrasound, seismic or equivalent field-based research
- sensor maintenance and calibration
- scientific field work
Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities for this position:
-Knowledge of infrasound & seismic research and field support.
-Knowledge of infrasound & seismic sensor design, construction, operation, deployment and calibration.
-Working knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems, MATLAB and other low-level programming languages.
-Understanding of infrasound & seismic signals and their associated sources.
-Ability to obtain and hold a US Secret clearance.
