Call for papers:

Contribution to special issue on Active Volcanism

and Continental Rifting in Africa

In November 2013, the second international conference on Active Volcanism and Continental Rifting with special focus on the Kivu Rift zone (AVCOR-2013) was organized in Gisenyi (Rwanda) within the Kivu Rift region. As for the first edition that took place in Luxemburg in 2007, the conference was a success with about 120 participants, half of which coming from the region, and the rest from Europe USA, West- and South Africa. The meeting aimed at gathering East African Rift (EAR) experts from various disciplines (geology, volcanology, geodesy, geodynamics, seismology, geography) in order to review the state of the knowledge about active volcanism and continental rifting, as well as the use of modern modeling approaches and observational techniques such as remote sensing, radar interferometry, GPS, geochemistry etc.

A special issue of the Journal of African Earth Sciences was published after the 2007 AVCOR conference and, following the success of this second edition, it was proposed to publish a special issue of the JAES addressing papers with topics in relation with the conference:

·         Geodesy, ground deformation measurements and modeling of deformations associated to volcanic, tectonic or landslide activity

·         Geochemistry, volcanic plume, rock and water

·         Geomorphology, structural aspects

·         Seismology, tectonic activity and volcano related seismology

·         Volcano monitoring (remote sensing, ground based techniques…)

·         Risk, vulnerability and society issues

The Kivu Rift should not be considered as a limitation and submission is also open to scientists that were not present at the meeting. Please feel free to circulate the information to potentially interested contributors.

It is also worth noting that JAES is a journal where all papers and special issues are expected to encompass a hard core of mainstream geology. However, cross-disciplinary science is encouraged and contributions from geology connected domains as for example vulnerability or risk assessments with regards to geohazards are most welcome. Rigorous science and application of the scientific method remains the rule.

Deadlines:

Because the conference is already one year past, and some authors are already advanced with publishable material, the deadlines are short.

We therefore ask possible contributors to send the

·         Draft title and list of co-authors of their paper by January 5th 2015

·         The full paper is expected for 15 May 2015.

è Send titles/papers: avcor2013@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
