LMU Munich, Germany: PhD project on shallow subaqueous explosive eruptions
From: Bettina Scheu <b.scheu@xxxxxx>
****************************************************************************************************

A 3-years PhD position on shallow subaqueous explosive eruptions is available at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, LMU University, Munich. The work is part of the ERC project EVOKES (Explosive Volcanism in the Earth System) awarded to Prof Dingwell.

The candidate will explore the complex dynamics of magma fragmentation in presence of a aqueous cooling medium. He/she will experimentally investigate the effect of thermal contraction versus thermal expansion on the fragmentation behaviour & efficiency. The experimental clasts will be analysed for their grain size and textural parameters. Thermal analysis will constrain their cooling history and used to model the results.

Candidates should have a MSc in a relevant area (volcanology, geophysics, Earth sciences); experience in laboratory work and modelling will be considered beneficial.

For further information please contact Bettina Scheu (b.scheu@xxxxxx) or Ulrich Kueppers (u.kueppers@xxxxxx).

To apply, send one PDF including your CV, a research statement, an academic transcript and contact information for 2 referees to Bettina Scheu (b.scheu@xxxxxx). The research statement should include a description of undergraduate research projects/studies undertaken as well as future research interests.

Evaluation of the applications will start 01.12.2014, until the position is filled. The project start is planned for spring 2015. Further we encourage interested candidates joining AGU Fall Assembly to contact us beforehand to organize a meeting during the conference

Best regards,
Bettina Scheu & Ulrich Kueppers
