Remote Scanning Electron and Electron Microprobe Analysis, Department
of Earth and Environment, FIU, Miami
We will be available to answer questions, receive applications and interview for this position at the upcoming Geological Society of America Meeting in Vancouver, October 19-22. Please stop by the FIU recruiting booth in the "Campus Connection" area of the Exhibition Hall.
The Department of Earth and Environment at Florida International
University (FIU) announces an opportunity for post-doctoral research in
the area of science education, in support of an NSF/TUES funded project
expanding the application of remotely-operated
Scanning Electron Microscopy and Electron Probe Microanalysis in
undergraduate geoscience curriculum. The candidate must have experience
in the operation of and data acquisition using an SEM and/or EPMA, plus
experience in the interpretation of results for
research purposes. A PhD in an area of Geoscience, with teaching
background or research emphasis on petrology, mineralogy or geochemistry
is ideal. The successful candidate will work with geoscience faculty
from several institutions to develop and support
educational applications of the instruments. Specific duties include:
1) operation and/or supervision of use of the instruments in support of
remote classroom activities and student research, 2) on-site training of
newly recruited remote users to facilitate
their specific applications, and 3) presentation of webinars or other
user-directed workshops to facilitate and encourage educational use of
remotely operated SEM and EPMA. The primary location will be at FIU (http://fcaem.fiu.edu/),
where a department engineer has responsibility for instrument
maintenance and repair. The appointment will last for two years
beginning in August 2015. The candidate will be actively engaged in the
scholarly activities of this project, including publications
arising from them, and will be supported and mentored in these efforts
by the project's PI team (Dr. Rosemary Hickey-Vargas (FIU), Dr. Jeff
Ryan (USF), Dr. Mary Beck (Valencia College) and Dr. Jamie MacDonald
(Florida Gulf Coast University).
