Dear Colleagues,
We would like to bring to your attention Session 3037 "Controls on the oxidation state of iron in the solid Earth and other terrestrial planetary bodies" at the 2014 Fall AGU meeting on 15-19 December. A summary of the session is as follows:
Iron is the most abundant redox sensitive element in the solid Earth and other terrestrial planetary bodies (planets, moons, asteroids), with valence states ranging from 0 in the core to 3+ in the shallow upper mantle and crust. Variations in the oxidation state of iron are thought to reflect both variations in system conditions (e.g., temperature, pressure, oxygen fugacity, phase assemblage) and the influence of open system processes, such as fluid or melt transport, that redistribute oxygen, electrons, and oxidized/reduced chemical species. Analytical advances have provided a steady increase in available data on the variability of iron oxidation state within terrestrial planetary bodies, while results from experimental studies and thermodynamic models have begun to provide a framework for understanding the processes that produce this variability. This session welcomes contributions from researchers working on all aspects of iron redox in terrestrial planetary bodies including petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, meteoritics and planetary science.
Invited speakers are:
Nicolas Dauphas (University of Chicago)
Abby Kavner (UCLA)
Catherine McCammon ( Bayerisches Geoinstitut)
Hongluo Zhang (U Minnesota)
We hope that you will consider submitting an abstract to our session. The deadline for abstract submission is 6 August. Abstract submission details are available at http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2014/scientific-program/
Conveners
Glenn A. Gaetani (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
Elizabeth Cottrell (Smithsonian Institution)
Katherine Kelley (University of Rhode Island)
