Dear All,

We warmly invite submissions to the following session at the AGU Fall Meeting:

*Birth, life and death of monogenetic basaltic eruptions*

Session ID#: 3531

Session Description:
Monogenetic basaltic eruptions are a geographically widespread hazard, and several major urban centres (e.g. Portland, Auckland, Naples, Mexico City) are built on or near monogenetic volcanic fields. Eruptions of this type typically follow a similar pattern of evolution: their onset is marked by the intersection of a magma-filled dyke with the ground surface, giving rise to a short episode of low fissure fountain activity; eruption soon localizes to a small number of vents – which may show a range of eruption styles – and typically ceases within weeks to months. This common pattern points to a common set of physical properties and processes. We seek contributions that address any aspect of the onset, evolution, and termination of monogenetic basaltic eruptions. We particularly welcome contributions which seek to explain and quantify eruption style and evolution in terms of the fundamental physical processes which operate in the sub-surface.

Convenors: Ed Llewellin (Durham University); Charlotte Vye-Brown (British Geological Survey); Carolyn Parcheta (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory); Bruce Houghton (University of Hawaii)

*Please note the abstract submission deadline of 6 August*
