Dear Colleagues.

We would like to draw your attention to a session at the upcoming Fall AGU meeting (Dec. 15-19, 2014) entitled: Deep Submergence Science in the SW Pacific Ocean.

The session is sponsored by Ocean Sciences and co-sponsored by Tectonophysics and VGP.
The AGU abstract submission tool is now open, and will close on 6 August 2014 at 23:59 EDT (03:59 +1 GMT).

Please consider submitting your latest work to this interesting, cross-disciplinary session.

Best Regards from the conveners.
Adam Soule (WHOI), Cornel de Ronde (GNS), Ken Rubin (SOEST, UH Manoa), Tim Shank (WHOI)

Session ID: 2788
Session description:  A wide range of geodynamic and tectonic settings make the SW Pacific Ocean a unique laboratory for multidisciplinary studies of the deep ocean and seafloor. Subduction along the Tonga-Kermadec trench deep troughs that are the focus of recent hadal biogeochemical studies. Extensive submarine arc volcanic systems have produced the largest historic submarine explosive eruptions and drive active hydrothermal circulation and seafloor mineralization. The back-arc region hosts numerous seamounts generated by subduction-related magmatism that have unique geochemical compositions, and is where the deepest visual observations of active volcanism have occurred. Samoa and adjacent ocean islands mark the origin of a 'hot-spot highway', indicating this region’s long history of magmatism fed by mantle plumes. This session will bring together the multi-disciplinary researchers using a variety of deep-submergence platforms (HOV, ROV, AUV, deep-towed cameras, and moorings) in the SW Pacific to share their latest results and foster interdisciplinary communication between regionally co-located studies.
