AGU 2014. Session 2264: Stow or Blow? Intrusions and eruptions of magma in the continents
****************************************************************************************************
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to our session at the next AGU Fall Meeting (15-19 December 2014, San Francisco). The session is entitled: "Stow or Blow? Intrusions and eruptions of magma in the continents”.
Contributions from geophysical, petrological, geochemical, field studies and numerical modelling techniques are welcome.
The AGU abstract submission tool is now open. Abstract submissions close on 6th August 2014 at 23:59 (23:59 EDT/03:59 +1 GMT)
Session ID#: 2264
Session description: Magmatism plays a fundamental role in the generation of continental crust, and the thermal and rheological evolution of mountain belts. We seek multidisciplinary and global approaches to understanding how magma accumulates in continental intrusions or extrusions including: (1) unraveling the time scales and P-T conditions of melt generation, crystallization and differentiation, (2) estimating petrologic thermal and mass balances which, in turn, provide insight on numerical models of crustal magmatism; (3) determining the rates of intrusion and eruption and whether those rates have been steady or episodic; (4) characterizing magma reservoirs, including their depth, volume, temperature, melt content, and shape; (5) quantifying how magma reservoirs interact with their surroundings through deformation, faulting, metamorphic reactions, and geothermal activity; and (6) constraining what controls whether a magma erupts or forms a pluton, as well as the type of eruption.
