Dear colleagues

I would like to invite your submissions to the following session during the Cities on Volcanoes 8 conference (September 9-13, 2014) in Yogyakarta:

(3.I) Case Studies
(3.I.A) Managing Volcanic Unrest Amid Scientific and Technological Uncertainty
Lead-Convener : Jo Gottsmann
School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol, UK

Description: Volcanic unrest is a complex multi-hazard phenomenon. It does not necessarily lead to an eruption and so introduces significant uncertainty into forecasts of a volcano’s imminent behaviour. A primary source of uncertainty is incomplete knowledge of how measured signals of unrest can be linked to their causative sub-surface processes and how to distinguish between critical, pre-eruptive and non-eruptive conditions. Recognising and explaining these scientific and technological limitations on eruption forecasts is crucial for effectively communicating how their complexities influence decision-making. This session is sponsored by the EC FP7 "VUELCO" project and aims to use the experience of past crises to identify methods for improving how scientific and technological uncertainties are addressed when interacting with decision-makers and the public.

Looking forward to your contributions with best wishes  Jo
