Postdoctoral Position in Geoscience Education- Applications of Remote Scanning Electron and Electron Microprobe Analysis, Department of Earth and Environment, FIU, Miami
The
Department of Earth and Environment at Florida International University
(FIU) announces an opportunity for post-doctoral research in the area of
science education, in support of
an NSF/TUES funded project expanding the application of
remotely-operated Scanning Electron Microscopy and Electron Probe
Microanalysis in undergraduate geoscience curriculum.
The candidate must have significant experience in the operation
of and data acquisition using an SEM and/or EPMA, plus experience in the
interpretation of results for research purposes.
A PhD in an area of Geoscience, with teaching background or research emphasis on petrology, mineralogy or geochemistry is ideal.
The successful candidate will work with geoscience faculty from
several institutions to develop and support educational applications of
the instruments.
Specific duties include: 1) operation and/or supervision of use
of the instruments in support of remote classroom activities and student
research, 2) on-site training of newly recruited remote users to
facilitate their specific applications, and 3) presentation
of webinars or other user-directed workshops to facilitate and
encourage educational use of remotely operated SEM and EPMA.
The primary location will be at FIU (http://www2.fiu.edu/~emlab/home.html), where a department engineer has responsibility for instrument maintenance and repair.
The appointment will last for three years, 2014-2017.
The candidate will be actively engaged in the scholarly activities of this project, including publications arising from them.
S/He will be supported and mentored in these efforts by
the project's PI team (Dr. Rosemary Hickey-Vargas (FIU), Dr. Jeff Ryan
(USF), Prof. Mary Beck (Valencia College) and Dr. Jamie MacDonald
(Florida Gulf Coast University)), and s/he
will also be able to pursue research in association with this project
