Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to a session on Transport and sedimentation of pyroclasts by and in water at the 2014 IAS meeting, the International Association of Sedimentologists. The conference will be held the 18-22 August 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Session convenors: Martin Jutzeler (National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK) and Vern Manville (University of Leeds, UK).

Session description:
Volcanic systems are amongst the most complex depositional environments on Earth, where the diversity of eruption styles and magnitudes influences the nature, volume and dispersal of the pyroclastic material and topography produced, all superimposed on the characteristics of the receiving environment, whether terrestrial or marine. Episodic eruptions can overwhelm existing sediment transport and depositional systems resulting in complex facies successions that evolve spatially and temporally, with large volumes of pyroclasts ending up in oceans or lakes, either directly from primary explosive eruptions in the form of pyroclastic flows and tephra fall, or from resedimentation events such as lahars and volcanogenic floods. Less well-known and even less well-understood subaqueous explosive eruptions can introduce volumes of pyroclastic detritus equivalent to their subaerial counterparts directly into the marine or lacustrine realm. In subaqueous volcanic settings resedimentation events are common, occur on the smallest slope gradients and can be triggered by earthquakes, water column disturbances of various sorts, or seafloor processes. We seek contributions on facies characterization of volcaniclastic accumulations through study of uplifted stratigraphic successions, submarine sampling, geophysical exploration, and micro-textural analysis of single particles. The emphases of this session encompass the reconstruction of source environment, eruption style, transport and depositional process. Case studies on risk mitigation are also welcome.

The abstract submission deadline is April 30, 2014. Full details can be found on http://www.sedimentologists.org/meetings/isc

Hope to see you in Geneva!
Martin Jutzeler and Vern Manville
