Session 1.II.D.2: As the lava flows: science, hazards, and human and environmental impacts
Conveners: Jean-Francois Smekens, Brett Carr and Fabrizio Alfano
(Arizona State University)
Due to their slow progression, effusive eruptions cause fatalities only in extreme cases, but remain a significant volcanic hazard due to their capacity to cause widespread destruction in populated areas. To date, only in rare documented cases have strategies been successfully applied to mitigate lava flow hazards, mainly by focusing on diverting lava flows from their natural path. In this session, we aim to bring together all who deal with lava flows and their hazards (scientists, city planners, government agencies, etc.) to develop new mitigation schemes. This session would welcome all contributions related to lava flows, with particular emphasis on:
• field, experimental or computer modeling data of lava flows
• quantitative lava flow hazard assessments and pre-eruptive forecasts of lava flow paths
• crisis management case studies where lava flows presented a hazard
• new strategies to mitigate lava flow hazards
• engineering and city planning solutions to lava flow problems
• multidisciplinary studies covering more than one of the above themes
