Post-graduate opportunity in Volcanology at the University of Mainz, Germany
From: "Castro, Jonathan" <

Dear Colleagues,
I would like to announce the forthcoming availability of an Early
Stage Researcher (Ph.D.) position (ESR4) in "Volcanic ash production
during long-lasting obsidian lava eruptions" set within VERTIGO, an
Initial Training Network funded by the European Commission.
This position will provide scientific and practical training in the
area of physical volcanology and will involve field and laboratory
research across different
academic and industry settings. The candidate will work on the
general problem of pyroclastic venting during effusive silicic eruptions
by targeting the mechanisms of ash-formation and emission, which, as
exemplified by the 2008 Chaitén and 2011 Cordón
Caulle (Chile) eruptions, may present a prolonged threat to local air
traffic and nearby communities.
The successful candidate will perform field work at recently active
rhyolite volcanoes, analytical and modern textural measurements to
characterize ash, and experiments on natural and analog silicate systems
that will isolate physical variables leading
to ash generation. In addition to their residence in the Institute for
Geosciences at University of Mainz, the candidate will spend up to
three months in residence at the University of Munich and six months
working in the glass-making laboratories at Schott
AG, Mainz.
As a participant in the VERTIGO network, the researcher will have
the opportunity interact with other peer researchers and PIs at
workshops, meetings, and during secondments at partner institutions.
Supervisor: Jonathan Castro (Univ. Mainz); co-Supervisors: Ulrich Kueppers (Univ. Munich); Wolfgang Mannstadt (Schott AG)
Desired skills:
• Experience in both field and laboratory settings
• Capable of strenuous work in outdoor settings
• Background in petrology, chemistry and volcanology
This position is a part of a larger European Union International
Training Network concerning the formation and evolution of volcanic ash.
Relevant details and the project scope are given here:
The VERTIGO project is a multi-Partner ITN (Initial Training
Network) funded under the FP7 Framework “FP7-PEOPLE-2013-ITN”. The
consortium consists of 9 full partners and 11 associated partners in
academia, research institutes and the private sector from
eight European countries. VERTIGO supports 13 Early Stage Researchers
(ESR) to develop an integrated mechanistic and quantitative
understanding of the physico-chemical processes during the lifecycle of
volcanic ash: from formation in a volcano, through changes
during the dispersal in the atmosphere to the impacts on life and
society.
Candidates from any nation may apply. However, they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their future host organisation (in
this case Germany) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date.
Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not
taken into account. Eligible applicants must be in the first four years
(full-time
equivalent) of their research career, counted from the diploma that
gives the rights to embark in a doctoral degree, have not yet obtained a PhD at the time of application, and should be proficient in English and demonstrate great written/oral skills. Note
that current PhD students do qualify as candidates. The
VERTIGO network is an Equal Opportunity educator and employer committed
to recruiting, supporting and fostering a diverse community of
outstanding students. All applicants who
share this goal are encouraged to apply. We strongly encourage the
application of women.
To apply, send one PDF including your CV, a research statement, an
academic transcript and contact information for 2 referees to Jonathan
Castro (
castroj@xxxxxxxxxxxx). The research statement should include a description
of undergraduate research projects/studies undertaken as well as future research interests.
Best regards,
Jonathan Castro
