POST-DOCTORAL POSITIONS IN TERRESTRIAL ANALOG STUDIES

As part of a new terrestrial analogs initiative for planetary sciences research within the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL), talented scientists and engineers with backgrounds in geology, geophysics, applied mathematics, mechanical/electrical engineering, informatics, and/or computer sciences are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will work as part of a multi-disciplinary research team, with opportunities for field-based and experimental research, geologic remote sensing of planetary surfaces (e.g., Earth, Moon, Mars, and Jupiter's moon Io), and geophysical modeling.

Research topics in Earth and Planetary Sciences will include: (1) development and deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs); (2) geophysical modeling of magma, lava, aqueous floods, debris flows, and/or explosive eruptions; (3) thermal-infrared imaging and thermodynamic modeling of volcanic processes; and (4) informatics and machine learning applications to geologic pattern recognition and data analysis.

The appointment will be full-time (1.0 FTE) for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years, contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding. Salary is commensurate with experience, but will be competitive and in keeping with other leading institutions in the United States. For full position details and to apply online, see http://www.hr.arizona.edu and reference job #53859. The University of Arizona is an EEO/AA employer - M/W/D/V.

The application deadline is January 15, 2014.

PHD POSITIONS IN PLANETARY VOLCANOLOGY

Creative and motivated students interested in exploring volcanic processes on Earth and other planetary bodies are encouraged to apply for a PhD position within the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) at the University of Arizona. Successful applicants will be encouraged to work in a multi-disciplinary group combining aspects of planetary sciences, geosciences, and geoinformatics with applications to better understanding the geologic history of the Moon and Mars through terrestrial analog studies, remote sensing, and geophysical modeling. Advanced quantitative skills in applied mathematics, statistics, physics, computer programming, and geological sciences are preferred. Interested individuals are invited to apply through the LPL website http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/graduate/admission.

The application deadline is December 6, 2013.
