Dear colleagues,

We invite you to participate in the Tephrochronology session organized in the Andean Volcanism Symposium, which will take place during the XIX Argentine Geological Congress, that will be held during June 2-4 2014, in Córdoba Argentina.

Tephrochronology, refers to the application of the research of volcanic ash deposits, as a chronological and correlation tool, specially used in Quaternary Geology and Geoarchaeology. Generally included in this discipline there are many aspects such as, the origin, dispersion and deposition of tephra, applied to different fields like Volcanology, Volcanic risk and impact studies, Paleoclimatology, Geomorphology, Geochronology and Paleoecology.

Whereas, volcanic ash dispersion modeling involves its transport, deposition and eventual resuspension. Globally speaking it implies forecasting simulations, its use for the adjustment of characteristic parameters of past eruptions (and vice versa), probabilistic risk maps and past event reproductions for model assessment. In addition, the detection of the volcanic ash cloud through remote and surface sensors spans out fundamental tools for the setting and validation of these models.

The purpose of this session is to promote the integration of surveys focused in the study of volcanic ash that contribute to basic scientific knowledge as well as to the solution of practical problems related to volcanic risks.

If you would like to submit a contribution to this session please send it before November 1st to the session organizers:

Gustavo Villarosa: villarosag@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Soledad Osores: soledad_osores@xxxxxxxxxxx

We look forward to your participation.
