Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Experimental Geochemistry / Mineral Physics
The Department of Earth Sciences (www.erdw.ethz.ch<http://www.erdw.ethz.ch>) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned professorship.
The successful candidate is an experimentalist with complementary theoretical background to lead investigations on the structure, physical and chemical properties of natural materials, with innovative applications to Earth and Planetary Sciences. The new professor will develop a dynamic research programme directed at understanding the properties and behaviour of Earth materials from the global to the atomic scale. The programme may include experiments at elevated temperatures and pressures and may be complemented by in-situ observations of natural and experimental materials (e.g. synchrotron and other microbeam methods) and/or theoretical modelling of physical chemistry. Potential fields of research include the physical properties of crystalline substances, the transport properties and physical chemistry of melts and fluids, the kinetics of phase transitions or the characterisation of isotopic fractionations operating from the interior to the surface of planets.
He or she will join the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology and is expected to initiate cooperative research programmes with other groups at ETH and related institutions. The new professor and his or her research group will contribute to introductory and advanced courses on crystallography, mineralogy and the physical chemistry of materials of the Earth's surface and interior. The professor will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses (German or English) and graduate level courses (English).
This assistant professorship has been established to promote the careers of younger scientists. The initial appointment is for four years with the possibility of renewal for an additional two-year period and promotion to a permanent position.
Please apply online at www.facultyaffairs.ethz.ch<http://www.facultyaffairs.ethz.ch
>
Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a statement of your research and teaching interests and the names of three potential referees. The letter of application should be addressed to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Ralph Eichler. The closing date for applications is 30 September 2013. ETH Zurich is an equal opportunity and family friendly employer and is further responsive to the needs of dual career couples. In order to increase the number of women in leading academic positions, we specifically encourage women to apply.
