Please consider submitting to session 7b of the Goldschmidt Conference 2013, which takes place in Florence, August 25-30, 2013 (http://goldschmidt.info/2013/index)

Session 7b: Redox Processes in the Subducted Slab, Mantle and Crust

Convenors: Stefano Poli, Robert Luth, Liz Cottrell

Redox reactions deeply affect mineral transformations within altered oceanic crust and sedimentary materials transported to depth. Fluid/melt speciation and redox reactions both in the slab and in the mantle wedge are intimately related, such that a variety of scenarios have been proposed for conditions in the metasomatized mantle. Due to its influence on petrogenesis, oxidation state may play a key role in the generation and the evolution of continental crust, e.g. promoting granulitization. There, magma degassing and crystallization drive redox changes that ultimately impact the continents and atmosphere. Despite its importance, redox is still poorly understood because it is difficult to characterize analytically, experimental studies at controlled redox conditions are limited, and the thermodynamic properties of oxidized mineral species are poorly known. We invite contributions from geochemists, petrologists, experimentalists, theoreticians and the modeling community that
relate to redox processes at convergent margins.

Keynote: Arno Rohrbach (Institut für Mineralogie WWU Münster)

The abstract deadline is 12th April 2013 at 23:59 (GMT)

We look forward to seeing you in Florence!
