Carbon Dioxide Earth Degassing from Volcanoes and from Non-Volcanic Areas

One of the major problems in modelling the geochemical carbon cycle is the
estimation of the igneous and metamorphic production of CO2. Current
estimates of global CO2 emissions associated with subaerial volcanism and
active lithospheric regions are in fact affected by large uncertainties.
This session is particularly devoted to the methods for the measurement
CO2 fluxes from the different environments including active degassing
during eruptions, passive degassing from dormant volcanoes, hydrothermal
systems, crater lakes, groundwater systems and, more generally, tectonic
active areas. These different types of emissions require different methods
of measurement and investigation. The session invite contributions that
regards these different methodologies including remote sensing of volcanic
emissions, measurements of the areal diffuse fluxes, direct sampling of
gas discharges from volcanic fumaroles, hydrothermal vents, groundwater
systems as well as geophysical approaches. Finally geochemical studies
based on isotopic and chemical compositions of the emitted gases, devoted
to assess the origin of the gases (mantle, recycling in subduction,
shallow metamorphic sources) will be welcome.
