Dear Colleagues,

We encourage you to submit an abstract to Session 07g "Magma Ascent from the Mantle to Eruption of Arc Volcanoes" at the Goldschmidt Conference in Florence, Italy (August 25 - 30, 2013). A brief description of the session is below. We hope to see you in Florence.

Magma Ascent from the Mantle to Eruption of Arc Volcanoes

Convenors: Erik Hauri, Marie Edmonds, Adam Kent
Keynote Speaker: Philipp Ruprecht (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory)

Magma produced by melting in the mantle wedge ascends into the crust, where some of it eventually erupts and liberates gases. While this broad framework is generally accepted, what is missing are fundamental predictions from dynamic models and observations from petrology, geochemistry and geophysics about the mechanisms by which materials move along these pathways from the mantle to the surface, the elemental fluxes along these pathways, and the relationship to volcanic unrest and eruption. Although volcano monitoring and geophysical techniques provide insight into eruptive processes, geochemical and petrologic studies can provide insight into processes that occur at great depths and over long timescales. We seek contributions that use techniques bearing on the ascent, differentiation and eruption of magma from the mantle to the volcano, that constrain the timescales of these processes, and that combine these data with geophysical observations and dynamic models.
