Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to our session 11c at Goldschmidt 2013 in Florence, Italy, August 25-30th.

Session 11c: Crustal Assimilation during Magma Emplacement

Session description:

The chemical composition of plutonic and/or volcanic rock (solidified magma) is commonly used to constrain the characteristics of the source from which a magma originally formed and the physical conditions of melt generation and evolution. The composition of magmas changes, however, during ascend through the lithosphere in response to either closed-system (fractional crystallization) or open-system processes (e.g. crustal contamination, magma mixing). This session focuses on the mechanisms producing chemical as well as isotopic variations in igneous rocks that help resolve mantle vs. crustal contributions and to quantify the elemental fluxes associated with such processes. The fundamental question to be addressed is how and to what extent the chemistry of igneous systems reflects source composition and how to identify if magmas have been modified during their ascent to shallow level magma reservoirs and volcanic vents. We welcome insights provided by the re-interpretation of data from classical measurements, from traditional petrological and geochemical approaches, and from novel isotope-geochemical techniques.

Conveners:

Luigi Dallai (Istituto di Geoscienze e Georisorse, CNR, Pisa, Italy)

Valentin R. Troll (Department of Earth Sciences, CEMPEG, Uppsala University, Sweden)

Please observe the deadline for abstract submission: April 12th 2013 at 23:59 (GMT).

We hope you will contribute to our session and we look forward to meeting you in Florence!

With the very best regards,

Luigi Dallai and Valentin Troll
