Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences
Ph.D. Position in Volcanology and Geochemistry

Dear All,

A full-time Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship
(MQRES (domestic) or iMQRES (international)) is available in the
Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Macquarie University,
Sydney, Australia associated with a successful ARC Future Fellowship
submission (FT120100440).

Project Background and Description:

The island of Java in Indonesia contains 41 Holocene volcanoes, of
which, 22 have had historical eruptions. Recent research has provided
exciting new insights into the tectonic development of Java, the
nature and influence of the sub-arc crust and the (more limited) role
of the depth to the benioff zone in controlling the geochemical
compositions of erupted lavas. However, a complete understanding of
the island is restricted by limited volcanological and geochemical
information of the East Javanese volcanoes.

This project aims to construct a high-resolution, age-constrained,
volcanological and geochemical record of one or more East Javanese
volcanoes (Kelud/Semeru/Bromo) to elucidate the temporal evolution of
East Javanese volcano plumbing systems and advance our understanding
of how petrogenesis has developed throughout the island.

The candidate will undertake fieldwork in East Java and receive
training in advanced volcanological, geochemical and isotopic
analytical techniques (e.g., trace element laser ablation ICP-MS and
Sr isotope micro-analysis of phenocrysts and Uranium-series isotopic
analysis).

This work will also benefit from the collaboration of colleagues at
Durham University (UK), Massey University (NZ) and the Ecole Normale
Superieure de Lyon (France).

Research Environment:

In the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment of
research quality within Australia's higher education institutions,
Macquarie University gained the highest ranking (5 out of 5) in the
disciplines of Earth Science, Geology, Geochemistry and Geophysics.

The analytical instrumentation and support facilities of the Macquarie
University Geochemical Analysis Unit (GAU) in the Department of Earth
and Planetary Sciences represent a state-of-the-art geochemical
facility (http://www.gemoc.mq.edu.au/Technology.html).

Applicant Requirements:

A candidate must normally possess either a Masters degree by research
or with a substantial research component, or bachelor degree with
First-Class Honours and additional relevant research experience and/or
qualifications in line with the University's scholarship rating
guidelines. Refer to Scholarship Requirements
(http://www.hdr.mq.edu.au/information_about/scholarships/scholarship_requirements)
for further information about this.

Application Procedure:

By the 28th March 2013:
Please submit a full CV and 500-word (maximum) statement on your
research interests to heather.handley@xxxxxxxxx

2nd - 5th and 15th - 18th April 2013: Interviews will be conducted
with each candidate (if applicant numbers permit) at a convenient
time.

Candidates will then be short-listed and invited to make a formal
application for the position (deadline for full Macquarie University
application is 1st May 2013), which includes writing a one-page
research proposal based on the project information given above.

The successful candidate must enrol before the end of 2013.

Initial inquiries should be directed to Dr. Heather Handley, email:
heather.handley@xxxxxxxxx, phone: +61 2 9850 4403.

Scholarship details:

The 2013 full-time stipend rate is $24,653 per year (tax exempt), for 3.5 years.

Macquarie University is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to
diversity and social inclusion.

Best wishes,
Heather
