Postdoctoral Research Associate in Geochemistry/Petrology
"How does crust form at arcs? - a multidisciplinary study of the Lesser Antilles Volcanic Arc"
Reference Number: 2539
Location: Science Site, Durham
Faculty/Division: Science
Department: Earth Sciences
Grade: Grade 7
Position Type: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed Term
Salary (£): 30424 - 36298
Closing Date: 5 April 2013
Job Description
This 3-year postdoctoral research associate post is funded by the UK Natural and Environmental Research Council (NERC). Aim of the project is to:
- examine petrologically and geochemically the basement of the Lesser Antilles Arc
- Compare compositions with those expected from existing seismic data
- integrate with existing data for volcanoes to derive differentiation models
The successful candidate will analyse a suite of existing cumulate samples from along the arc and develop models using these data. The project is supervised by Prof. Jon Davidson (Durham University). Funding is available for 3 years, and the post holder will be based in Durham with opportunities to do fieldwork in the Lesser Antilles and additional labwork at Bristol.
Requirements and Responsibilities
The specific duties of the post are
to:
1. Analyse trace element compositions of cumulate phases using laser ICP-MS.
- Complete database of major element compositions using electron microprobe.
- Calculate expected seismic velocities from compositional data and compare these with observed seismic velocities.
- Use cumulate data along with existing volcanic rock data to develop differentiation models for volcanoes along the arc.
- Collect isotopic data from cumulates to establish the extent to which differentiation is open system.
- Test and document any newly developed code.
- Provide regular reports of the progress of the project.
- Address any unforeseen scientific and numerical challenges during the project.
- Disseminate the results of the project by writing papers for relevant journals and by conference presentations.
The post holder must comply with relevant University and Department policies, including Financial Regulations, Equal Opportunities Policy, Promoting Race Equality Policy, Health and Safety Policy, Information Systems Security Policy and Intellectual Property Rights and Register of Interests Policies.
Job descriptions cannot be exhaustive and the post-holder may, from time-to-time, be required to undertake other duties, which are broadly in line with the above responsibilities.

Essential
- Completed Ph.D. in a relevant area (e.g. Earth Sciences, Geochemistry) before starting the post.
- Understanding of subduction zones.
- Analytical experience in laser ICP-MS and isotopes.
- Familiarity and experience with petrogenetic modelling.
- Good level of numeracy.
- Proven track record in conduct research at an international level.
- Record of significant and relevant publications.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, team-working and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment.
- Ability to work and solve problems independently.
- Enthusiasm and personal initiative for research.
