On behalf of the Mineralogical Society of America, I invite undergraduate and graduate research students to submit a proposal for the MSA Grant for Student Research in Mineralogy and Petrology. The proposal deadline is June 1, 2013.
Two $5,000 grants will be awarded in January of 2014.
Proposals will be evaluated on how well the written proposal demonstrates the scientific excellence, creativity, and feasibility of the proposed research project.
The grant is for graduate or undergraduate researchers to obtain funding for research-related expenses only. Proposals that make requests for money for other purposes will not be considered. Travel to meetings, conferences, short courses, non-research field trips, tuition, non-research living (room and board) expenses, etc. are not suitable uses of the money. Neither should the money be used for salary or wages for the researcher.
The student researcher must write the proposal. Although consultation with one's research supervisor is encouraged, text should not be taken from a supervisor's grant proposal or publications. The MSA proposal should include no more than four pages of text, figures, and references; moreover there is a limit of 500 words for the text. An additional budget justification page may be submitted.
Further information and a list of past recipients may be found at http://www.minsocam.org/MSA/Awards/Min_Pet_Award.html, although using the Preview feature to read the entire grant application form is helpful. The online application itself is available from the Society’s website <http://www.minsocam.org/MSA/Awards/Grant_Appl.html>. Alternatively one may receive a hard-copy application form from the MSA Business Office by emailing Dr. J. Alex Speer (jaspeer@xxxxxxxxxxxx).
With enthusiastic encouragement,
Kirsten Nicolaysen
