In a number of messages to the volcano list server, I have been trying to convey the message that we should read the actual sentence of Judge Marco Billi before taking a stand on this matter. This is both to stand on the side of these scientists or to blame them.
I my self, having worked in Italy for more than 20 years, think that to work there is hard and unrewarding. No matter what you do, right or wrong. This in particular is a game where there are only losers on all sides. People that criticize the judgment perhaps don’t know the real reasons of it, but people that take a stand against these scientists, would they have behaved differently? It is easy to say “yes” after the fact. Knowing Italy and the Italians I think that very few would have acted differently.
Even if I fully respect this judgment, I tend to be sympathetic with these scientists, I could have been one of them.
