INVOLCAN Science Cafés are live - and lively – events organized by the Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias (INVOLCAN) that will take place in casual settings such as pubs and coffeehouses at the touristic city of Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife, Canary Islands) where the sixth edition of the world largest International Conference on Volcano Risk Management - “Cities on Volcanoes” (CoV6-Tenerife 2010) was celebrated with 863 participants from 53 different countries. These events are open to everyone (tourists and local people), and feature an engaging conversation with a scientist about a particular topic related to volcanoes (volcano risk management, volcano resources, volcano tourism, etc.). INVOLCAN Science Cafés are planning to be a comfortable atmosphere where everyone joins in. They are not long lectures with a passive audience listening to an expert since encourages conversation, debate, and interaction.
Why present at an INVOLCAN Science Café?
The unique café format offers many benefits for guest scientists and experts since it will contribute to (i) educate the public about the volcano research scientists and other experts are involved in, (ii) enjoy thought-provoking discussion in a casual venue, (iii) find out what public reaction is to their volcano research, (iv) share their enthusiasm for volcanology, (v) represent their institution and helping to achieve its outreach goals, and (vi) practice their communication skills in a relaxed setting.
For those volcano scientists visiting the Canary Islands either for leisure or field work, please do not hesitate to contact us in advance (nperez@xxxxxxx) and become a potential guest scientist for INVOLCAN Science Cafés.
