Postdoctoral research position at University of Leeds, UK
From: Daniel Morgan <D.J.Morgan@xxxxxxxxxxx>
*************************************************************************************

The School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow for the project "Chronology of magmatic processes and linkage to unrest signals and eruption behaviour" which will be a fixed-term for 2 years commencing September 2012.

The fellow will undertake analytical work on samples of material from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption of 2010 in order to characterise magma properties (e.g. temperature, oxygen fugacity) and timescales of magmatic processes from thermodynamic and kinetic modelling.

The work will involve usage of the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Microprobe at the University of Leeds in order to characterise crystals from the eruptive deposits and to provide data that will constrain diffusion modelling work. The fellow will look at a variety of samples produced throughout the eruption to examine the input and mixing of fresh magma pulses. Following collection of results, the fellow will work with a range of external collaborators in Edinburgh (University of Edinburgh, British Geological Survey), Iceland and beyond, in order to investigate the wider context and significance of your results.  There will also be the opportunity to present your results at an international conference.

Applicants should have a PhD (or be close to obtaining a PhD) in a relevant area, with experience in the field of petrology and study of volcanic rock samples. Experience of using SEM and microprobe equipment is advantageous.
