AGU session NH009: Geohazards and Disaster Risks in the North Pacific Region
From: John Eichelberger <jeichelberger@xxxxxxxx>

This year marked the centennial of the great Novarupta-Katmai eruption of 1912 on the Alaska Peninsula, largest on Earth in almost 200 years. The eruptions of Bezymianny in 1956 and Tolbachik in 1975-1976 on the Kamchatka Peninsula were smaller but nevertheless legendary spectacles that stimulated volcanological research. Ash production from somewhere along the Kuril-Kamchatka-Aleutian-Alaska line of subduction zone volcanism is business as usual, and reaches a level of that poses a hazard to aviation several times a year. Please consider contributing an abstract concerning volcanic eruption studies, hazard assessment, monitoring, and risk mitigation for the Fall AGU Natural Hazards special session, NH009, on this challenging region. Discussions of how cooperation between Russian and U.S. scientists has or could benefit scientific understanding and disaster risk reduction are especially encouraged.

Description:
“The Kamchatka-Aleutian-Alaska region is at high risk of extreme geophysical events. During the last century, the region has experienced M>9 earthquakes, tsunamis that obliterated whole towns, and VEI>5 explosive volcanic eruptions, all arising from Pacific tectonic plate subduction beneath North America and Asia. We welcome contributions on regional geohazards arising from subduction; application of satellite remote sensing techniques and advanced in situ monitoring techniques for earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis; feasibility and benefits of real-time geophysical data sharing; ash hazard to aviation.”

The session will be convened by Alik Ismail-Zadeh of the Russian Academy of Sciences and John Eichelberger of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The deadline for submission is August 8th.
