Eruption precursor session Cities on Volcanoes 7, Colima, Mexico

We all know the importance of identifying and interpreting precursors to volcanic
eruptions. Please consider presenting your work at Cities on Volcanoes 7 to take place
in Colima, Mexico during 19 – 23 November. Here is the description of one of the
sessions:
Session 1.5: Identification and understanding of eruptive precursors
The identification and interpretation of eruptive precursors is a critical part of
volcanology. As the variety of monitoring tools increases, the models that explain the
anomalous signals have become increasingly important. Precise forecasting requires a
clear understanding of the conduit or deeper processes and the interaction between
ascending fluids and the surrounding environment. In this session we aim to discuss the
latest developments in the understanding and quantifying of both geophysical and
geochemical precursors, and how their measurement has been integrated with numerical
models. Presentations of new techniques that can be applied during emergencies and
case studies of successful - or even unsuccessful - forecasting are welcome, as are
examples of how petrological signals in particular have been incorporated into
monitoring schemes. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the last plinian eruption
at Volcán de Colima, we would particularly welcome studies of precursors to plinian
events.
Conveners: Chris Kilburn and Nick Varley
Please remember the deadlines 12 August for a discounted registration fee and 28
August final deadline for abstract submission. If you are interested in a workshop or
excursion, places are filling fast so I recommend you register soon.
