Position announcement: Lead Scientist, User Facility for Large-Scale Geohazards Experiments

The Center for Geohazards Studies, University at Buffalo (UB), is seeking a scientist or engineer who will lead the development of an international user facility for large-scale experiments related to geological
hazards such as volcanic eruptions and geological mass flows. The facility will be housed on a 700-acre parcel of land near Buffalo, New York, is part of a new Campus for experimental research on extreme
events, and is being developed in collaboration with the UB Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the development of the
site, leading and participating in proposals for experimental infrastructure and for specific research projects, working with the Science Executive Committee to develop strategic plans for the facility, and will
also be expected to conduct experimental research at the site. Seed funds for research by the Lead Scientist are available, and two postdoctoral researchers will be hired to help develop research projects at
the facility. Qualifications for the position include: Ph.D. in Geology, Geophysics, Civil or Geological Engineering, or a closely related field, experience in geological fluid dynamics and/or mechanics of
geological materials, experimental instrumentation, and a desire to work in a collaborative mode in developing the user facility. The position is a full time (12 months) research appointment carrying up to
three years' support from the University, with the expectation that funding development from external sources will provide ongoing support after the initial three years. Contact Greg Valentine
(gav4@xxxxxxxxxxx), Center for Geohazards Studies Director, for more information.
