(Mitigate and Assess risk from Volcanic Impact on Terrain and human Activities)
N. 4 – February 2012
International Scientific Conference on Integrated Approaches for Volcanic Risk Management
Following UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction recommendations and starting from shared existing knowledge and practices, the MIAVITA project is organizing a conference aiming at presenting innovative tools and integrated cost effective methodologies to mitigate risks from on active volcanoes (prevention, crisis management and recovery).
The conference will be held on 11-12 September 2012 at Hohenheim University, Stuttgart, Germany. The deadline for abstract submission is 1 May 2012.…Read more at: http://miavita.brgm.fr/pressroom/Pages/ScConfIntegratedApproachesforVolcRiskMgt.aspx
MIAVITA: 3 years progress
Work performed and main results achieved in the first 3 years of the MIA-VITA project are described here. They deal with risk mapping development, cost effective monitoring, vulnerability assessment, resilience and communication strategies for crisis management. Results are achieved in partnership with local scientists and stakeholders in Africa (Mount Cameroon, Fogo in Cape Verde), and Asia (Merapi in Indonesia, Kanlaon in Philippines)….Read more at: http://miavita.brgm.fr/pressroom/Pages/3yearsprogress.aspx
A year after the 2010 Merapi eruption: volcano hazard and Indonesian government mitigation measures
One year after the last eruption of Merapi volcano, the delegates of the Indonesian “Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM)” describe the main current hazards and the mitigation measurements that the Indonesia Government has taken. The last eruption took place in October 26 – November 12, 2010 and has claimed 367 human fatalities, 277 injured, 410,388 evacuated as well as the damaged of infrastructures, houses, live stocks and agriculture areas….

Ash and Gas Emission Measurements at Merapi: Infrared and Ultra-Violet Imaging Cameras to Support Hazard Warnings
Fast-sampling imaging cameras were setup on the slopes of Merapi volcano, Indonesia during February 2011. The cameras were being installed to test the efficacy of using remote sensing equipment to monitor and quantify ash and gas emissions for hazard mitigation. The successful trials of the instruments and their characteristics are described here. The work was supported by colleagues from BPPTK (Yohyokarta), the Earth Observation Centre, University of Singapore, Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the University of Bristol....Read more at: http://miavita.brgm.fr/pressroom/Pages/AshandGasEmissionMeasurementsatMerapi.aspx
Italian Civil Protection meets stakeholders and civil authorities in Cameroon: a first report on the Crisis management in Cameroon
In the frame of MIAVITA project, the Italian Civil Protection Department organized a mission to Cameroon on August 2011 in order to sketch out the main features of the civil protection Authorities in Cameroon. During the survey needs and strength of the civil protection system for a effective response were recognized and they are reported here. MIA-VITA is a 48-months project financed by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, Area “Environment”. The project has been designed to address multidisciplinary aspects of volcanic threat assessment and management in the International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPCs), from prevention to crisis management.
MIA-VITA team gathers civil defence agencies, national geological and volcanological surveys, scientific teams (earth sciences, social sciences, building, soil, agriculture, information technologies (IT) and telecommunications) and an (IT) private company. It involves partners from both Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal and United Kingdom) and the ICPCs Countries (Cameroon, Cape Verde, Indonesia, Philippines), where the target sites volcanoes are located (Mt. Cameroon, Fogo, Merapi and Kanlaon volcanoes respectively). http://miavita.brgm.fr
MIA-VITA project aims to develop and deliver useful products for the participating ICPCs and for all the other ICPCs countries affected by similar volcanic risk.
