We would like to draw your attention to the following session at the Goldschmidt 2012 (Montreal, 24-29 June 2012). The abstract submission deadline is 1st February 2012.

6b. The dynamics of volcanic excess degassing: from source to surface

Compared to rift- and hotspot-associated volcanism, it is common in subduction zones to observe volcanoes that emit larger amounts of gas than can be dissolved in the volume of erupted magma. Combined with an understanding of the underlying mechanisms, quantification of this so-called excess degassing during explosive, effusive and non-eruptive activity provides valuable insights into eruptive processes. Moreover, the dynamics of eruptive processes are known to be linked to both the gas composition in magmas and the physics of the degassing process itself. Hence, a multi-disciplinary approach with measurements of dissolved, exsolved and emitted magmatic volatiles should increase our knowledge of eruptive dynamics. Thus, it is crucial to integrate studies on the behaviour and transfer of volatile components from their starting conditions in deep magmatic systems (e.g., pre-eruptive content, volatile solubility) through ascent in the volcanic conduit and release into the atmosphere (e.g. gas composition and flux, ash-gas-aerosol interactions). Combining these data with other modern geophysical methods (e.g. seismic and IR measurements) and numerical modelling, will improve our understanding of the dynamics of magmatic excess degassing. This session aims to bring together geochemists, geophysicists, petrologists, experimentalists and volcanologists to discuss their latest results on volatiles and their escape from magma systems in subduction zones.
