From crop to community: Environmental toxicology and agricultural practice in volcanic environments
Supervised by: Saskia van Manen, Vincent Gauci, Steve Blake and Hazel Rymer
Volcanic degassing is a major hazard to communities at persistently active volcanoes. Continued long-term exposure to the primary volcanic gases can result in chronic ailments, reduced agricultural output, and acidification of rain, soils and groundwater, while indirect effects impede development and poverty reduction efforts. This project aims to examine the effect of persistent volcanic degassing on local cash crops such as coffee, pineapple and dragonfruit, to examine the extent to which volcanogenic pollutants end up in the food chain and potentially contribute to disease.This project would suit a numerate environmental science graduate with a strong interest in volcanology.
