*****************************************************************************************
The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University invites early career scientists and engineers to apply for a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in the broadly defined study of earth surface dynamics. We imagine the successful applicant to be someone who has demonstrated proficiency in the use of and/or design of space-based observing platforms to investigate the dynamics of the lithosphere, asthenosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere or biosphere. Preference will be given to applicants who are interested in interactions among two or more of these domains. Conventional fields of expertise of desirable candidates might include (in alphabetical order) atmospheric physics, ecosystem dynamics, geodesy, geodynamics, glaciology, hydrology, physical oceanography, or physical volcanology. SESE is an intrinsically transdisciplinary academic environment. Thus, we are particularly interested in applications from candidates with broad research interests, enthusiasm for collaborations that transcend field-specific research, and the desire to integrate space-based measurements with other scientific methodologies. A hallmark of our community is the full intellectual integration of Earth and space sciences and engineering, so applicants should give special thought to how their interests might expand to include the surface dynamics of other planets or the development of space-based sensor platforms.
SESE is a rapidly growing academic unit that will expand its activities into a new building with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in Summer 2012. Arizona State is a dynamic university environment where cross-unit collaborations are strongly encouraged. The successful applicant will have ample opportunities to develop collaborations with other faculty in the natural sciences, the Fulton Schools of Engineering, and the Global Institute of Sustainability.
Applications should include: 1) a cover letter that includes a description of the applicant’s research and teaching interests and experience; 2) a current CV; and 3) the names, addresses and telephone numbers of three references. All materials should be submitted electronically, in PDF format, to sesenewfac@xxxxxxx.
Application deadline is 18 December 2011; if not filled, reviews will continue weekly until the search is closed. Arizona State University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to excellence through diversity. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. ASU's complete non-discrimination statement can be found at https://www.asu.edu/titleIX/.
