Volcandpark
1st Internacional Congress on Management and Awareness in Protected Volcanic Landscapes
Olot, 21–25 May 2012
Volcandpark is the first congress to be devoted to the management, the raising of awareness and geotourism in protected volcanic areas. It aims to act as a forum for debate and thought that will provide a link between knowledge of vulcanology and territorial planning and awareness in the people who work in these volcanic landscapes (national and natural parks, natural reserves, etc.).
The Congress will take place in Olot (Spain), a town lying wholly within La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, and will be organized jointly by this protected area (www.gencat.cat/parcs/garrotxa), the Catalan government’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Food and the Natural Environment, Olot City Council (www.turismeolot.com), the Institute of Earth Sciences Jaume Almera (IJA) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) (www.ija.csic.es) and the Geological Institute of Catalonia (www.igc.cat/), and is endorsed by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) (www.iavcei.org).
Scientific programme
The conference will develop four main themes:
management of protected volcanic areas;
scientific values of, and research in, protected volcanic areas;
communicating heritage values through education and interpretation,
geotourism as a factor of economic and community sustainable development in protected volcanic areas.
The meeting will include four main symposia, each addressing one of the main themes, and will combine oral presentations in the morning (invited keynotes) and posters in the afternoon, that will be exhibited and anyone who desires it can present them orally. The meeting is intended to promote discussion forums for each of the respective topics and, in particular, interdisciplinary, cross-boundary discussions. Emphasis will be given to poster presentations and discussion forums, through to short talks.
