Job description :
College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences

The University of Exeter and British Geological Survey have formed an Alliance to pursue research on sources of critical metals needed for the development of new and clean technologies such as energy conservation, digital systems and environmental protection. This research involves understanding and extending the resource base, decarbonising the extraction process, finding new ways to exploit deposits and designing techniques to recover the metals as by-products or from waste.

The successful applicant will join Camborne School of Mines, where there is already an established research team working on a variety of critical metals and carrying out multidisciplinary research in geology, mining, minerals and energy, with research support from a variety of sources including many industry contacts. The postholder will be based at the University of Exeter Cornwall Campus but will also spend time (about four months per year) with the Minerals Sustainability Team at the BGS headquarters, Keyworth, near Nottingham.

The post is a lectureship but will primarily focus on research for the first three years.

We seek an exceptional candidate who will have a geological background, be qualified to PhD level, and have experience in one or more of the critical metals or in geological research that can be applied to critical metals. He/she will contribute to the Alliance by leading research primarily focused on the source, transport and concentration of one or more critical metals in the Earth's crust.
