Dear Volcanologists

I would just like to advertise the European Geosciences Union
open-access journal called, Solid Earth (http://www.solid-earth.net/),
which recently published an article on "First observational evidence
for the CO2-driven origin of Stromboli's major explosions"
(http://www.solid-earth.net/2/135/2011/se-2-135-2011.html). In
addition, there is an article in the discussion phase still on
"Dynamic magma mixing revealed by the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption"

You may be asking yourself what is the advantage of publishing in an
Open-Access journal. Well the following are just some of the
advantages:

(1) Rapid publication (in Solid Earth Discussions - SED: the quickest
publication so far was within 4 days: the average over the past year
is 9 days for publication). Once it is in SED it is assigned a DOI and
is citable.
(2) There are currently NO page charges for Solid Earth. And there is
free copy-editing for authors from non-English speaking authors.
(3) Once accepted through the Discussion phase, the revised version is
considered by the assigned Topical Editor and if publishable is rapidy
published in Solid Earth.
(4) Apart from open access reviews, the traditional review process is
also undertaken whereby 2 reviewers are asked to submit their reviews
to the open discussion. Once that review is submitted you can respond
immediately - no need to wait for all reviews and an editors decision.
(5) The paper is in the open discussion phase between 4-6 weeks,
before a decision is made by the Topical Editor.
(6) At present the average publication time from initial submission to
publication in Solid Earth is ~90–100 days….
(7) Solid Earth and SED are now included in DOAJ, the Directory of
Open-Access Journals, which will allow us to start to deliver TOCs and
article metadata. DOAJ is used by various other indexing services as
the source for OA content.

This EGU open-access journal is improving, with an impressive list of
papers already published in Solid Earth. We anticipate to have this
journal to have an impact factor by 2013, and we anticipate to have an
impressive citation index within a few years comparable to other
successful EGU open-access journals [e.g., 5-year impact factors for
Atmospheric Chemistry & Physics (5.8), Biogeosciences (4.1), Climate
of the Past (4.2)].

All the best
Darren Grocke
