******************************************************************************************** PhD in Mathematical Geophysics at Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa From: Tomaso Esposti Ongaro <ongaro@xxxxxxxxxx> ******************************************************************************************** The Italian Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is sponsoring one PhD scholarship for the Faculty of Sciences at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, in the context of the School of Mathematics for Industrial Technologies and Finance. The PhD is focused on mathematical aspects of geophysical, volcanological and environmental research, with specific emphasis on: 1) Numerical methods for the simulation of transport processes 2) Statistics analysis and probabilistic methods Research themes include, but are not limited to, the following subjects: - magma chamber dynamics - fluid-structure interaction in volcanic systems - magma ascent, degassing and fragmentation - multiphase flow models - volcanic columns and pyroclastic density currents - atmospheric dispersal of volcanic products - lava flows - transport in porous media - hydrothermal and geothermal systems - volcano flank stability - dynamics of debris flow and lahars - elastic waves in non-homogeneous media and inverse modelling - ground deformation processes in volcanic regions The PhD scholarship will be assigned through a competition based on work to date and entrance exams at Scuola Normale Superiore. You can download the announcement at the following link: http://www.sns.it/en/scuola/ammissione/corsodiperfezionamento/scienze/secondasessione/ Please note that the application deadline is 12 September 2011, whereas the PhD programme is starting on November 1st, 2011 and will last for three years. Detailed information can be found in the competition regulations at the following link: http://www.sns.it/en/scuola/ammissione/corsodiperfezionamento/scienze For more information on the competition regulations and on the PhD projects, please contact Prof. Stefano Marmi (SNS, s.marmi@xxxxxx) or Dr. Augusto Neri (INGV, neri@xxxxxxxxxx).
