An opportunity is available for a PhD project investigating the dynamics of phreatomagmatic volcanism for range of historic eruptions in Iceland. The project will involve a mix of field, lab, and computational modeling approaches to determining the role of water in enhancing the explosivity of lava- and magma-water interactions. The successful applicant will ideally have a strong quantitative background in physics and mathematics as applied to geological phenomena, and will preferably have experience in field geology/volcanology, laboratory analyses of volcanic samples, numerical modeling and/or computer coding. The student will need to be self-motivated, versatile, and capable of working effectively in a variety of settings with different project collaborators.

The successful applicant may start as early as Spring 2012; participation in a summer 2012 field campaign is essential. Formal applications are to be directed to the University of Hawaii Graduate Studies website (see URLs/deadlines below), but interested potential students are first invited to discuss the opportunity with Dr. Sarah Fagents – please send a CV and e-mail message describing your background and interests to (fagents@xxxxxxxxxx).

Further information about the graduate program at UH is available at http://www.hawaii.edu/graduatestudies/university/html/aboutuh.htm and http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/admissions/gg_admissions_graduate.html. The deadline for formal applications to the graduate program is 15 August 2011 for admission in the Spring 2012 semester, and 15 January 2012 for admission in Fall 2012.
