Joint United States-New Zealand Research Workshop on Geothermal Energy Resources
November 14-18, 2011

WORKSHOP GOALS
§ Provide a venue for industry to educate researchers on their needs and the challenges of characterizing, monitoring, and managing hydrothermal reservoirs
§ Researchers will be given the opportunity to present their own research and discuss how it may be useful for the investigation of hydrothermal systems
§ Both researchers and industry representatives will offer their ideas regarding future challenges in the study of hydrothermal systems
§ Representatives of potential funding venues (e.g., industry, NSF, DOE) will be invited to explain their funding priorities and to discuss how workshop participants can become involved
§ Participants will collaborate on the development of a Proceedings that will be available for broad distribution to the US and NZ communities
The workshop will be broken up into three general themes:
(1) Fossil geothermal systems
(2) Geotechnical: drilling at all depths, pressures and temperatures; hot dry rock versus cold wet rock; drilling-induced seismicity
(3) Numerical modeling of multiphase fluid and heat flow
Some specific topics will include:
· Geologic context/controls for geothermal systems (magmatic, tectonic, volcanic)
· Characterizing magmatic heat sources
· Quantifying heat flow from surface measurements and circulation tests
· Soil-gas exploration techniques; shallow structural permeability; differentiating magmatic from biogenic volatiles
· Geothermal reservoir permeability and rock mechanics; micro- to macro-scopic studies; multiphase fluid flow in fractured rock mass, physical and chemical controls
· Heat and mass transfer modeling in geothermal systems; multiphase fluid and thermal dynamics, and reservoir modeling
· Chemical fingerprinting of known and blind geothermal resources; locating and characterizing high upflow zones and pathways for magmatic volatiles
· Joint geophysical and geological exploration techniques; Geostastical modeling; Induced seismicity
We strongly encourage all scientists and engineers involved in geothermal reservoir technology to apply to attend the workshop. We have NSF financial support (airfare and accommodations) for 16 faculty members/professionals and 4 students. A limited number of additional unsupported participants will also be considered; industry professionals are welcome, but will be required to pay their own way. Participants will be invited based on their expertise and as required to cover the diversity of topics for presentations.

Submission deadline: Sept. 1, 2011
The papers presented should be on recent research relating to the topics outlined above. The papers will be available as preprints at the Workshop and subsequently published in the Proceedings. The workshop proceedings will be published online.
