We would like to invite interested students to our annual field trips to Katmai National Park in Alaska and Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanoes in Kamchatka. The trips are organized by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, and Kamchatka State University.

The Katmai trip is scheduled for June 5-18, 2011. The trip provides a unique opportunity to visit the Valley of Ten Thousands Smokes, the site of the largest eruption in 20th century. Participants will explore products of the 1912 Katmai eruption, i.e. ignimbrite sheet, Novarupta Dome, and Katmai Caldera.

The Kamchatka trip is scheduled for August 10-24, 2011. Participants will have an opportunity to explore two active arc volcanoes - Mutnovsky and Gorely, featuring a wide range of volcanic processes and phenomena, from products of caldera-forming eruptions to active fumaroles. The trip can be combined with the participation in the 7th biennial workshop on Japan-Kamchatka-Alaska Subduction Processes (August 25-30, 2011, http://www.kscnet.ru/ivs/slsecret/jkasp_2011/index_eng.htm).

Students will receive 3 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit through UAF. Detailed information and application forms are available at http://www.uaf.edu/geology/field-studies/international-volcanologi/. Application deadline for both trips is April 1, 2011.
