Dear All,

This is to remind you that the deadline for submission for abstracts for the IUGG2011 General Assembly is 17th January, 2011, just a little more than 1 month away.

Please consider sending an abstract to the following IAVCEI Symposia that will take place during the IUGG 2011 conference in Melbourne (28 June-7 July):

Session V07: Subaerial and Subaqueous Lava flows

Organiser: IAVCEI Symposia

Lead Convenors: Thor Thordarsson (UK), Andrew Harris (France), Sonia Calvari (Italy)

Scope: Lava flows are formed by complex fluids that span the range of known magma compositions on Earth and other planetary bodies. Lava flow studies are multifaceted and involve a wide range of approaches, including field based observations and measurements, laboratory simulations, numerical modelling and remote sensing. Studies on effusive eruptions at active volcanoes, in particular those with high recurrence intervals of such events, have played a key role in linking flow field architecture, flow structures and magma rheology to the emplacement modes and mechanisms characteristic of individual lava types. These studies have also facilitated assessments of the hazard and risk posed by lava flows to populated areas and demonstrated the need for near-real time forecasting of lava flow length and path in order to protect the public. Research over the last two decades has highlighted several critical elements that exert important controls on flow behaviour. These include degassing-induced changes in magma/lava rheology, rate of heat loss during lava emplacement, modes of emplacement (i.e. endogenous versus exogenous growth - inflation), open versus closed system transport (channels vs tubes), and motion patterns at the active flow fronts, to name but a few. There is little doubt that effective integration of the multifaceted approaches used in lava flow studies will continue to enhance our understanding of lava flow dynamics and emplacement styles of ancient, as well as extraterrestrial, lava flow fields. By the same token, improvement of existing approaches as well as introduction of, and integration with, new research tools will enhance our research capabilities. We invite contributions that deal with these and other aspects of subaerial, submarine and planetary lava flows and particularly encourage contribution of results that consider multidisciplinary approaches.

Call for Abstracts Close: Monday 17 January 2011

At the end of the Symposia, we would like to produce a Geological Society Special Publication. The volumes in this series are published online in the Lyell Collection (_www.lyellcollection.org_ <http://www.lyellcollection.org>) and as hardback books. This series is highly regarded internationally for the quality of science and production. There were nearly a half million accesses of the online abstracts last year, and about 250,000 downloads of full papers. SPs published from 2008 will be included in the Book Citation Index, which will be available in ISI Web of Science from late 2011. Citation data will be accessible and will be included in an author’s h-index. They are already available in Scopus, which many people now use as an alternative to ISI. There is an online submission and review system for handling the papers, which speeds up the review process, and three free colour figures in each article for the print edition (all online colour figures are free).

Please do express your interest in participating to the special issue of the GSSP by sending an email to the convenors.
