*Graduate Student Opportunity in Physical Volcanology – Pyroclastic Density Current Dynamics*
******************************************************************************

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington is accepting applications for a graduate student in physical volcanology.  The project involves combining field and numerical techniques to understand the dynamics of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs).  PDCs are the most dangerous hazard associated with explosive volcanic eruptions. Due to the dangers of observing these ground-hugging currents of searing hot gas, ash, and rock in real time, their processes are poorly understood. Thus we rely on interpreting field measurements and observations, and reconciling them with numerical models to gain a better understanding of the dynamics controlling this deadly phenomenon.

The graduate research advertised here would contribute a vital part to an ongoing study of the May 18, 1980 PDC deposits at Mt St Helens.  This project will involve a strong field component followed by an analytical and/or numerical analysis of the field data.  Applicants should have a strong background and aptitude in field and quantitative methods.

Information on the graduate degree program and admission to UW can be found here: http://www.ess.washington.edu/ess/education/grad/

Applications are due by Jan 1 st.
