The Asociación Latinoamericana de Volcanología (ALVO) was formally founded
on November 7, 2010, in Manizales, Colombia. During the commemoration of the
25th anniversary of the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the foundation
of ALVO was announced. In this meeting and with the presence of delegates
from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama,
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and Chile, the executive board was
elected as follows:
PRESIDENT: Hugo Delgado Granados (UNAM, México)
VICE-PRESIDENT: José Viramonte (UNAS-CONICET, Argentina)
GENERAL SECRETARY: Marta Calvache (INGEOMINAS, Colombia)
TREASURER: Sofía Navarro (INGEOMINAS, Colombia)
REGIONAL COUNCIL (NORTHAMERICA): Enrique Guevara (CENAPRED, México)
REGIONAL COUNCIL (CENTRAL AMERICA -CARIBE): María Martínez (OVSICORI, Costa
Rica)
REGIONAL COUNCIL (NORTHERN SOUTHAMERICA): Gloria Patricia Cortés
(INGEOMINAS, Colombia)
REGIONAL COUNCIL (SOUTHERN SOUTHAMERICA): Felipe Aguilera (Universidad de
Atacama, Chile)
In a well attended launching ceremony, the president of IAVCEI Prof. Setsuya
Nakada was present as well as other participants from countries other than
the Latin American region.
The main purpose of ALVO will be to strength and promote the ties among
Latin American volcanologist. ALVO will also promote international
collaboration within and outside the Latin American region.
