The community of volcanologists in the US and Latin America is invited to apply for funding to participate in a two week hands-on workshop focussing on the remote sensing, monitoring and hazards of Open Vent Volcanoes to be held at the University of Costa Rica  January 10-23, 2011 (http://www.geo.mtu.edu/rs4hazards/PASI).

The workshop is a Pan American Study Institute event, sponsored by US National Science Foundation and supported by the University of Costa Rica, Michigan Tech and the USGS.  A detailed schedule of presenters is being developed by a group of scientists (http://www.geo.mtu.edu/rs4hazards/PASI/Session_Details.html). 

The pre-requisite skills we seek in application include the following:
a) Bachelors and/or graduate degree(s) in an earth science field or other discipline that utilizes remote sensing in hazards-related work.
b) Familiarity with image processing software and GIS applications. c) Field experience in hazards assessment. d) Current position/affiliation in a remote sensing and/or hazards related field of work or study.

Travel and living support is especially prioritized for applicants in two categories: 
1. Latin Americans with BS degrees and professional assignments and future plans in volcano hazards and monitoring and 
2. US based Post-doctoral scientists and advanced PhD students with interests in volcano monitoring and hazards.

The goals of the PASI Open Vent Volcanoes workshop are: 
1) increase awareness of available data and instruments for collecting data,
2) increase proficiency in acquiring and processing data, 
3) increase awareness of the availability of tools for processing remotely sensed data, and 
4) enable more effective and comprehensive archiving and sharing of data.
