Position Announcement
Engineering Technician I
Biology/Chemistry/Geology Departments
Central Washington University

The Biology, Chemistry and Geology Departments at Central Washington
University will fill a part-time (30-hours/week) cyclic Engineering Technician I
position with an anticipated start date of December 2010.

Job Summary: This position will have the primary responsibility for assisting with
the maintenance of instrumentation in these three departments. Under general
supervision of the supervisor, faculty and Engineering Tech II, the technician will
assist in designing, developing, modifying, constructing, installing, calibrating,
and repairing instruments, apparatus, and equipment.
The technician will also assist the Engineering Tech II in developing procedures
for instrument use and integration into the curriculum as well as train users, and
evaluate and recommend the purchase of instruments, equipment and
apparatus. The basic duties of this position require: 1) keeping the
instrumentation in an operational and tuned state, 2) a commitment to rapid
response when instruments fail so that critical lab time is not lost, 3) open and
direct communication between the Engineering Technician and the user
community, and 4) a commitment on the part of the technician to increase his/her
expertise.

Appointment: 11.5 months, part-time (30 hours per week)

Required Qualifications:
• Three years of experience as an electronics technician, instrument maker,
or engineering assistant. Related course work or technical school training
may substitute year-for-year for up to two years of work experience.
• Experience in use and maintenance of scientific instrumentation and
equipment such as: knowledge of electronics, circuit diagrams, and
electrical test equipment; mechanical skills; knowledge of small motors;
knowledge of use of compressed gases and regulators; knowledge of
vacuum and pressurized systems.
• Basic knowledge of desktop computers.
Preferred Qualifications
• Basic knowledge of chemistry and the use of basic chemical apparatus.
• Excellent communication skills: oral and written.
• Willingness and demonstrated ability to learn about new instrumentation.
• Good organizational skills and the ability to determine and set priorities.
• Self directed and able to work independently.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to work closely with instrument users
ranging from novice to expert.

Salary: Range 45 ($2245.50/month with increments up to $2938.50/month)
Anticipated Start Date: December 2010
Screening Date: November 15, 2010
