The School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University is seeking applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Earth Remote Sensing and Embedded Network Sensing.  Please note the short timescale associated with this opportunity; complete applications should be received no later than December 1, 2010.

Earth Remote Sensing and Embedded Network Sensing

The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University is seeking new faculty expertise in observing Earth evolutionary processes on short timescales and at a variety of lengthscales. We are interested in new colleagues who focus on remote sensing from space, on the deployment of sensor networks within various components of the Earth system, and/or on the integration and interpretation of large datasets from orbital and embedded sensor networks. Specific research areas in earth remote sensing might include the design and operation of satellite instrumentation to study volcanic processes, ocean and atmosphere chemistry and dynamics, hydrologic or geomorphic processes, glacier dynamics, natural hazards, active tectonics, or ecosystem structure and function. Specific research areas in embedded network sensing might include the design and deployment of networks of sensors on and beneath Earth’s surface or in its oceans and atmosphere. The most desirable candidates will have strong engineering backgrounds with a penchant for collaborative research with a wide array of earth scientists. The School is particularly interested in hiring faculty at the Assistant or Associate Professor level who aspire to leadership positions in satellite observing initiatives (as outlined in the 2007 NRC report “Earth Science Applications from Space: National Imperatives for the Next Decade and Beyond”) or in major embedded network studies such as NSF’s Earthscope’s Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO), Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), and National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). The successful candidate’s appointment may begin as early as August 15, 2011.

Established in 2006, SESE is one of the fastest growing academic programs at one of the fastest growing institutions of higher learning in the United States. An essential part of its mission is a transformative integration of disciplines such as biogeochemistry, astrophysics, geophysics, cosmology, volcanology, hydrology, geology, and systems engineering to address the grand challenges in earth and space sciences. SESE faculty will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including high-bay assembly clean rooms, in the School’s new building opening in Spring 2012. In addition, they have access to a wide variety of research and fabrication facilities housed in the Fulton Schools of Engineering and other units within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Applications should include: 1) a cover letter that includes a description of the applicant’s research and teaching interests and experience; 2) a current CV; and 3) the names, addresses and telephone numbers of three references. All materials should be submitted electronically, in PDF format, through the school’s website: http://sese.asu.edu/opportunities-faculty

Application reviews will begin on November 1 and continue until the position is filled. To ensure full consideration, we encourage submission of complete applications no later than December 1, 2010. ASU is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer that actively seeks diversity among applicants and promotes a diverse workforce.
