The Italian Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is sponsoring two PhD scholarshipsfor the Faculty of Sciences at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, in the context of the School of Mathematics for Industrial Technologies and Finance.
The PhD is focused on mathematical aspects of geophysical, volcanological
and environmental research, with specific emphasis on:

1) Transport processes and numerical methods for partial differential equations
2) Statistics analysis and probabilistic methods

Research themes include, but are not limited to, the following subjects:
- magma chamber dynamics
- fluid-structure interaction in volcanic systems
- magma ascent, degassing and fragmentation
- multiphase flow models
- volcanic columns and pyroclastic density currents
- atmospheric dispersal of volcanic products
- lava flows
- transport in porous media
- hydrothermal and geothermal systems
- volcano flank stability
- dynamics of debris flow and lahars
- elastic waves in non-homogeneous media and inverse modelling
- ground deformation processes in volcanic regions
- fluid-structure interaction in volcanic systems

PhD scholarships will be assigned through a competition based on work to date and entrance exams at Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.

Please note that the application deadline is 20 September 2010, whereas the PhD programme is starting on November 1st and will last for three years.
The following requisites are necessary to apply to the competition:
1. the candidate must have completed a 2nd-cycle university degree or
equivalent by 31 October 2010;
2. the candidate must be under 30 years of age as of 31 October 2010;
3. the candidate must not have been subject to the disciplinary measure
of "expulsion" from the Scuola provided for by the Internal and
Academic Regulations;
