************************************************************************************** AGU 2010 Session: V06 175 Years of Geological Research in the Galapagos From: Eric Mittelstaedt <mittelstaedt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> ************************************************************************************** Dear Colleagues, It has been 175 years since Darwin’s visit to the Galapagos Archipelago in 1835. Darwin’s initial remarks on the geology of the islands initiated an ongoing interest in what are now type locations for hotspot-ridge interaction and the evolution of ocean islands. The following special session at this year’s AGU Fall Meeting attempts to bring together the most recent discoveries from this rich and exciting area. We invite researchers in all geological disciplines to submit their recent work in the Galapagos to V06: 175 Years of Geological Research in the Galapagos. Don’t forget: The AGU abstract submission deadline is September 2. Sincerely, Dennis Geist Karen Harpp Eric Mittelstaedt Christopher Sinton Apologies for multiple postings! V06: 175 Years of Geological Research in the Galapagos Sponsor: Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology CoSponsor: Geodesy, Tectonophysics, Study of Earth's Deep Interior Description: The Galapagos Islands and the Galapagos Spreading Center constitute one of the planet's best systems for understanding tectonic processes at all scales, including mid-ocean ridge magmatism, hotspots, and interaction between the two. Moreover, recent geophysical studies within the archipelago are providing key insight into volcano dynamics. Three oceanographic cruises are taking place in the region in 2010, and this session will be devoted to synthesizing that work in addition to studies within the archipelago itself. ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
