Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the following session for the next Fall AGU Meeting in San Francisco (13-17 December, 2010):

GP08 "Magnetism of Glassy Materials"

Glassy materials often comprise some of the best paleomagnetic recorders because of the fine-grained magnetic particles that tend to be included in these rapidly-cooled materials. Obsidian flows and obsidian artifacts, ash flow tuffs, submarine basaltic glass, lunar and other impact glass, and glassy archeological slag all contain single-domain sized magnetic minerals and have been used to infer geomagnetic directional and intensity variations, to make tectonic and other geologic interpretations, and to date and infer provenance of archeological materials.  Yet the interpretation of magnetization in metastable glassy materials presents some special challenges; in addition to understanding the timing and temperature conditions of particle formation and magnetization (as in all paleomagnetic recorders), the tendency of glass to relax and devitrify adds another layer of complexity to evaluations of its magnetic stability over geologic time scales.  We invite contributions addressing the formation and modification of magnetic minerals in glassy materials, the magnetic properties of glassy materials, and geological, planetary, and archaeological applications of glass magnetism.

Please note that the deadline for abstract submission is September 2nd, 2010.

We hope you will consider a submission, and look forward to seeing you in San Francisco.

Best regards,

Julie Bowles, University of Minnesota (jbowles@xxxxxxx)
Joshua Feinberg, University of Minnesota (feinberg@xxxxxxx)
Rob Sternberg, Franklin and Marshall College (rob.sternberg@xxxxxxxxx)
